If I had the power to rewrite the creeds, I would always start with Christ. It is through Christ that I begin to understand the nature of God. When I say Christ, I mean more than just Jesus of Nazareth. I mean every loving action of God toward creation. The Good News is God loves us. Whenever such news is shared, there is the Christ. These wondrous glad tidings were most fully revealed in Jesus but are not limited to him. Truth to tell, I think we’ve got the whole thing backassward. Without Christ, I’m not really interested in the God called Yahweh. Joshua fighting the battle of Jericho, the Ten Commandments, even Baptism and Holy Communion mean nothing to me without Christ. Generic prayers, like the ones so many folk want put into our schools, are empty for me if they are not shaped and molded by Christ. "One nation under God" is an vacuous motto for me without the Christ. It signifies nothing. In Christ, I witness a God who loves so deeply, so amazingly, so profoundly, that nothing can stop it. In Christ, I discover a God who opens up to embrace all of creation, and not just those folk who pray in school or live in America or worship in Christian churches. Without Christ, God is nothing more than an idol for sects who claim they have all the answers, for churches who say there is but one way, for people who claim to be Christian but live as if they believe in the devil. It is in this Christ, this loving action of God, where I put my faith. |
