Of the many, many gifts Mother Teresa has left us, surely one of the most important was her recognition that God could work through anyone. Like the great mystics who went before her, Mother Teresa implored Hindus to be good Hindus and Muslims to be good Muslims, and Methodists to be good Methodists and on and on and on. What mattered to her was not the doctrine but that drink of water. What mattered was not what one believed as much as what one did. Of course, Mother Teresa believed deeply in the tenets of her Catholic faith but she was wise enough, saintly enough, to recognize what really mattered. |
