Confessions of a Christian AgnosticHome

It is an old vaudeville routine. The stage is bare but for one solitary light describing a small circle on the floor. A man is stooping in the light, obviously looking for something he has lost. A policeman appears from the wings and inquires as to the man’s activity.

"What are you doing?"

"I’m looking for the key to my house." replies the searcher.

Together they search around the small pool of light whereupon the cop asks,

"Are you sure you lost it here?"

"No. I lost it over there." says the man and points to a dark corner of the stage.

"Then why on earth are we searching over here?" shouts the constable.

"Because this is where the light is!" comes the reply.

There are times, of course, when this is precisely what we do in our search for God. We find ourselves looking in all the wrong places because that is where the light is...the light of convenience or placidness or status quo. Then we wonder why we never experience God. Sitting sheltered away from the world’s problems and pain, we bemoan our sagging faith, the status of our spirituality. We blame God when the problem really resides with us and where we are looking.
