I can accept that there was a time when God might not have wanted women as priests or equal human rights or birth control. I’ve read the Bible. I’ve studied the history of the faith. But what I refuse to accept is that God is dead and rotting in a book somewhere. The God I worship is alive and well and seeking to share new insights with me and all creation. The God I worship is actively involved in a loving relationship with me that changes who I am and, I dare say, changes who God is, as well. The Hebrews, you may remember, did not have a useable name for God. God was the great mystery and no one dared pronounce that holy mystery’s name. "I will be who I will be," God told Moses on the mountain when Moses tried to pin God down. I will be who I will be. God not as noun but verb. Perhaps we should honor such ancient wisdom in these very modern times. |
