I really love the way the book of Jonah wraps up...because it isn’t wrapped up. There is no nice conclusion, no happily ever after ending. Jonah goes off to pout and that’s where we leave him, simmering over the abundant love of God. A whole nation has been saved but one p.o.’ed prophet has condemned himself to hell. "It is better for me to die than live." It just isn’t fair. This is the final sentiment from Jonah but those words live on and on and on. They are said every time God calls us to forgive those who have hurt us, or love those who are our enemies, or accept those who are different from us. Too often that leaves us sitting with Jonah, watching the worm eat the only shade we think we have, feeling sorry for ourselves. That is the image too many of us have of Christianity. We think it is a religion only for those on the inside, only for those who follow all the rules and do all the right things. Isn’t it great we have a Bible that can so beautifully guide us to the truth? Isn’t it great we have a book in the Bible that can do all that and still be only two pages long! |
