Is there hell? I experience it too often to deny its existence. I enter hell every time I move off in my own direction. Every time I choose to make the rules rather than follow the law of love, I enter into hell. Certainly hell exists. But it is not eternal. God will not allow it. The Good Shepherd will search for us until he finds us. Nothing can stop that searching, not even death. God is not bound in God’s searching by the boundaries of time despite the sinister threats we often hear regarding how we must believe this or that before we die and find ourselves outside the love of God. We are never outside that love. The resurrection is the proof that not even death can stop God’s amazing grace. It is with this image of eternal love that I travel on my spiritual journey, knowing that as my faith ebbs and flows, God’s love never ebbs. That although I experience times of great ecstasy and paralyzing enmity, God’s grace never stops. It continues to reach out unbounded by time or space. This is why I say that here is news that seems too good to be true. But it is. |
