Most of us saw the movie. There is Kevin Costner standing amidst the tall stalks of beautiful Iowa corn. He is content, satisfied, happy. Suddenly, literally out of the blue, a voice calls to him. We watch and wistfully wish it was calling to us. Surely one of the reasons "Field of Dreams" was such a big hit a decade or so ago was this desire all of us have for God to speak to us. If only God would give me a word like he did for St. Paul or St. Joan or even Kelvin Costner out there in that field of dreams. Why doesn’t God speak to me the way God has done for others? God does. All the time. Only we need to listen. "I will not leave you desolate. I will come to you." Jesus says. And he does. He comes in many ways. Someone once said that God knocks on the door. God doesn’t break it down. We need to open the door and let God into our lives. We need to learn how to listen to the voice that calls to us in many different ways, using many different voices. |
