Long before Albert Schweitzer ever headed for the jungles of Africa, he was renowned as a Biblical scholar. One of his formative works was an extensive book on Jesus entitled, The Quest for the Historical Jesus. Its publication was a shock to the theological world. Many in the church felt that Schweitzer was, at best, a heretic. Condemnations of damnation met with the book’s publication. He was reviled for questioning the ancient truths of the faith. You know the rest of the story. In his thirties, the theologian and brilliant scholar entered medical school and began preparing for a future spent in the most primitive of surroundings, doing the work that no one else wished to do. He spent the rest of his long life caring for a forgotten people, healing wounds, loving the loveless, serving Christ. There in the jungle of Lambarene, through a man who was ostracized and censored by the church, Christ rose again. |
