When someone who loves me, who is truly my friend, points out the error of my ways, I trust that such judgement is made in my best interests. Because this person cares for me, they offer counsel and guidance to help me in my life. This is the judgement found in love. This is the judgement of God. Of course, I may choose to ignore the advice or ridicule the counsel but in so doing I remove myself from the very person who loves me. I deny myself the joy of a loving relationship. The promise of Christ is that God never abandons us. God never says, ultimately and forever, "You are damned." What would be the point? If God is love, then love is infinite. I believe that the image of a once and forever day of judgement has been dreamed up not by God but by us. Because we cannot fathom such amazing grace as this, we have decided to put limitations on it, boundaries around it, fences to hold it in. We want it just for ourselves. But the risen Christ will not allow it. The risen Christ knows no boundaries, limitations or fences. |
