It is called a mezuzah. You will find it placed on the doorjamb in the homes of many pious Jews. A little box, it contains part of a passage from Deuteronomy, "Hear O Israel. The Lord our God is one Lord and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." The mezuzah is there as a reminder. It is touched each time one enters or exits through the doorway. "Remember," it says at each touching. "Remember to love the Lord." We can learn much from our Jewish sisters and brothers. To mount such a symbol on our doorjambs is to bring this God we worship on Sunday mornings into our homes for the rest of the week. But perhaps we don’t want to do that. Maybe we would just as soon leave God all nicely boxed up in a beautiful church building. Bringing God into our homes can be a very dangerous proposition. We can’t escape anymore. We can’t claim to be ignorant of our call to be followers of Jesus if every time we enter or leave, we are forced to be reminded to love God. Perhaps it is best to leave things just the way they are. Our piety practiced just on Sunday mornings. |
