Confessions of a Christian AgnosticHome

I assume Jesus loved his mother but it is only an assumption because the references we have of their interaction from the Bible are troubling, to say the least.

Jesus rebuffs his mother early on in the gospel of John.

He foretells of children being pitted against their parents in the gospel of Matthew.

He seems to even deny a special bond with Mary in the gospel of Mark.

"Who is my mother?" he wonders aloud, certainly shocking his listeners and shocking us as well.

Which is precisely the point.

The Gospel is a shocking thing. So vast, so amazing, so wondrous is God’s grace that it always shocks. Whenever it becomes too familiar, whenever we think we understand it all, whenever we can say its name without losing our breath or gasping in awe, it probably isn’t the Gospel but some watered down version made palatable for the masses.
